What “Dry” Actually Means

Both compounds are sold on producing a dry, hard, vascular look. Almost nobody explains the mechanism, and understanding it changes how you read the claim.

It’s about oestrogen, not fat

Many anabolic steroids aromatise — they convert partly to oestrogen, which drives sodium and water retention. That’s what produces the puffy, smooth appearance associated with bulking compounds.

Neither oxandrolone nor stanozolol aromatises [5]. No oestrogen conversion means no oestrogen-driven fluid retention.

So the dry look isn’t the compound removing water. It’s the absence of the water that other compounds add.

Why that distinction matters

Subcutaneous fluid sits between muscle and skin, softening definition. Remove it and the same physique looks harder and more vascular at identical body fat.

Which means the visible change these compounds produce is substantially about appearance rather than composition.

The consequence people miss: a dry look reads as evidence of low body fat, but it’s evidence of low subcutaneous water. Someone can look considerably leaner on either compound while their actual body-fat percentage has barely moved — which is exactly why transformation photos on these drugs are so persuasive, a point our before-and-after guide works through.

And it reverses

Normal fluid balance returns when the compound clears. The hardness softens within weeks, which is why the physique in the photo isn’t the physique two months later.

What persists is whatever the training and the deficit actually built — which was never the part the compound was responsible for.

The Lipid Evidence, in Numbers

This is where the comparison stops being a matter of opinion. Stanozolol has been studied directly, and the figures are stark.

The crossover trial Eleven male weight lifters received oral stanozolol at 6 mg daily for six weeks, then injectable testosterone at 200 mg weekly, in a crossover design. Note the comparison arm. The same trial found injectable testosterone at a supraphysiological dose barely touched HDL — which tells you the problem is the oral 17α-alkylated route rather than androgenic potency.

And it happens faster than anyone expects

A separate study tracked the time course day by day. HDL stayed stable for the first two days, fell 14% by day three, and was down 39% by day seven [2].

Hepatic triglyceride lipase — the enzyme driving the change — rose 62% within 24 hours and 230% by day three.

What that means for a “short cycle”: the idea that a brief run is safer because there’s less time for damage doesn’t survive this data. The enzyme change begins on day one and HDL is down by nearly 40% within a week — well inside what anyone would call a short cycle.

Where oxandrolone sits

Honestly: worse than injectables, better documented than most, and not directly compared head-to-head with stanozolol in humans.

What’s established is that oral, non-aromatising androgens suppress HDL more than aromatisable ones, particularly the HDL2 fraction — which puts both compounds in the same unfavourable group [1].

Oxandrolone adds a complication: it also lowers triglycerides, which means a lipid panel can look partly improved while HDL falls. That trap is covered in our breakdown of what to get checked.

So the honest verdict is that stanozolol’s lipid profile is the worse of the two on the available evidence — and that the absence of equally detailed oxandrolone data isn’t the same as a clean bill.

The Liver: Both, and the Injectable Doesn’t Help

Both compounds are 17α-alkylated, the modification that lets a steroid survive first-pass metabolism — and the same modification that makes orals hepatotoxic [3].

Here’s the point that catches people out. Injectable Winstrol is still stanozolol, and stanozolol is still 17α-alkylated.

The injectable misconception

People switch to Winstrol Depot believing injection bypasses the liver. It bypasses first-pass metabolism, which is a different thing.

The molecule is unchanged, and the alkylation that causes hepatic strain is a property of the molecule rather than the route. Injecting an alkylated steroid reduces the first pass; it doesn’t make the compound liver-friendly.

It also hurts — the aqueous suspension is notoriously painful, which is the main reason people take it orally instead.

In clinical use, even low-dose stanozolol produced temporary elevation of liver transaminases alongside reduced HDL in a randomised trial in patients with venous ulcers.

Virilisation: Neither Is the Women’s Option

Anavar is marketed to women far more heavily, and Winstrol is used by them too. Both are androgens, and androgens virilise.

The practical difference is timing rather than presence. Stanozolol’s effects tend to appear faster, which means people notice sooner — and Anavar’s slower onset is a delay in feedback rather than protection.

The Joints Question

Winstrol’s reputation for drying out joints is one of the most consistent anecdotal reports in this whole category, and it deserves honest treatment.

The claim is that stanozolol reduces synovial fluid and leaves joints feeling stiff or painful under load, while oxandrolone is neutral or mildly helpful.

What there isn’t is good controlled human evidence either way. It’s a widespread, consistent user report rather than a documented pharmacological effect, and it should be read as such.

Worth noting that both compounds are used in cutting phases, where a calorie deficit, lower body weight and heavy training all affect how joints feel independently of any drug.

Stacking Them: Why It Compounds Rather Than Balances

Anavar with Winstrol is one of the most searched cutting combinations, usually on the logic that two mild compounds are gentler than one strong one.

The arithmetic doesn’t work that way, and it’s worth being specific about why.

Two alkylated orals, one liver

Both are 17α-alkylated. Running them together means two hepatotoxic compounds processed by the same organ at the same time.

There’s no division of labour here — the liver doesn’t handle one and rest from the other. The strain adds.

Two HDL suppressors, one lipid panel

This is the more serious problem. Stanozolol alone cut HDL 33% and HDL2 71% in six weeks, and oxandrolone suppresses HDL independently.

Combining them doesn’t average the effects. Both act through the same mechanism — increased hepatic lipase activity — so they push the same marker in the same direction.

The reasoning that produces this stack: “they’re both mild, so together they’re still mild.” But mildness in this category describes androgenic activity and aromatisation, not hepatic or lipid effects — and those are precisely the two things being doubled.

And you’ve doubled the counterfeit exposure

Legally, There’s No Difference

Both were brought into Class C of the Misuse of Drugs Act by the same 1996 Order [4].

Possession for personal use isn’t a criminal offence for either. Supply carries up to 14 years, and importing by post is an offence regardless of who it’s for.

The Case That Made Winstrol Famous

Every anabolic steroid has a reputation. Stanozolol has a news story, and it’s the reason most people have heard of it at all.

Seoul, September 1988

Ben Johnson won the Olympic 100 m final in 9.79 seconds, beating Carl Lewis and setting a world record. It was, at the time, the most watched race in history.

His post-race sample tested positive for stanozolol. Within days he was stripped of the gold medal and the world record, and sent home.

Why it mattered beyond one athlete

Canada responded with a full judicial inquiry — the Dubin Inquiry — which took testimony from athletes, coaches and doctors and documented how widespread the practice had become.

What emerged wasn’t a story about one sprinter. It was the first public accounting of systematic doping in elite athletics, and it reshaped anti-doping policy internationally.

The part relevant to this comparison

Stanozolol was the compound of choice in that era for a specific reason: it produced strength and lean tissue without the visible water retention that made other steroids obvious.

That’s the same property being sold today as a “dry” look. The pharmacology hasn’t changed — only the marketing around it.

Oxandrolone is among the most expensive anabolic steroids to manufacture, which makes it a substitution target. A steroid-testing trial reported oxandrolone being replaced with — of all things — stanozolol.

On lipids, Winstrol — clearly, and with numbers behind it. A 33% HDL reduction and a 71% collapse in HDL2 over six weeks is the worst documented profile of the two, and the time-course data makes short cycles no defence.

On liver, roughly equivalent. Both are 17α-alkylated, and the injectable route doesn’t change that.

On virilisation, Winstrol appears faster — which is arguably safer. Faster feedback means sooner discovery, and Anavar’s slower onset is the reason women often continue past the point they’d have stopped.

On product integrity, Anavar. It’s the more counterfeited of the two, and stanozolol is one of the documented substitutes.
